nissan has revived the return of the electric car with its radical mixim concept. running purely on electricity, the mixim is nissan’s idea of an environmentally friendly vehicle of the future.
it’s designed to appeal to the ipod generation with its mix of radical styling, futuristic electronics and controls akin to those on a computer game.
the nissan mixim’s design certainly stands out, with its angular two-door shape giving a pretty good clue this car is out of the ordinary.
with lithium-ion batteries and two “super motor” electric motors (one for the front wheels, the other for the rear wheels), the nissan mixim is a zero emissions vehicle.
without giving too many details, nissan claims the mixim has “unusually rapid performance combined with a usefully extended [touring] range”.
top speed is claimed to be 180km/h and the mixim can cover 250km between recharging.
as you can see from its striking design, the mixim is hardly about to arrive in dealerships. it was built to demonstrate nissan’s commitment to the environment and explore new technologies.
but nissan admits the mixim is almost no chance for making it into production, although elements of it – including its electric powertrain – will be further explored.
the idea of an electric car is nothing new. electric cars have been around for decades, but they’ve never been hugely popular and have been non existent in recent years.
arguably the most controversial electric car was the ev1 from general motors. it was hailed as the next big thing from general motors before being promptly killed off, prompting conspiracy theories and heated debate about its sudden demise.
