argentum motors acquires 60% in heuliez sa
delhi-based argentum motors has acquired a 60% stake in french automaker, heuliez, at an investment of 25 million euros. french company re-organization board, caisse des depots et consignations (cdc) will also be investing five million euros in heuliez, which had been facing financial problems for some time.
argentum motors had, some time back, taken over the now-defunct daewoo motors plant in surajpur, near delhi, in order to kick off its contract manufacturing business. after being taken over by argentum, heuliez, one of the largest customized car manufacturers in europe, will undergo extensive restructuring and will be divided into three separate entities.
heuliez electric will build electric vehicles under the ‘heuliez’ brand, while heuliez engineering & design will work closely with argentum engineering & design and work towards becoming a global automotive design company. finally, heuliez manufacturing will utilize its manufacturing facilities in india and europe to make customized cars and auto components.
‘we are looking at utilising heuliez’s strong distribution platform and leverage its design business to build a global automotive design company. we will also tap the fast-growing electric-vehicles market, and launch new products in the global market,’ said ajay singh, chairman, argentum motors.
heuliez is expected to showcase a new, battery-powered mini commercial vehicle at the upcoming paris motor show in september this year. this electric cv is likely to be launched in europe by mid-2009. argentum and heuliez are also likely to develop other electric cars and pickups for the european market, which might also make their way to india by 2010-11.

argentum motors on monday signed a memorandum of understanding with software solutions provider dassault systems for designing and engineering of engine components for global automotive original equipment manufacturers (oems).
the collaboration would bolster argentum from being a contract manufacturer of automobiles and components to also an engineering service provider for oems. jointly set up by the two companies, the centre of excellence would leverage on dassault’s partnership for providing software solutions to auto companies and argentum’s manufacturing capacity.
“globally, oems are increasingly engaging component companies in the design and development process. we do not just want to manufacture for international oems but also provid value added services to our customers,” said mr b.v.r. subbu, director, argentum motors pvt ltd, while signing the mou. this would make argentum a complete solution provider as it would be able to provide the conceptual design for the component, produce it, test the product and deliver it to the customer.
powertrain solutions
currently, dassault has almost every automobile maker such as toyota, hyundai, mercedez, porsche buying its software for product lifecycle management solutions and under the new venture with argentum engineering design (aed) it is aiming to provide powertrain solutions to various companies. aed, currently, employs 50 professionals and by the end of the year would have a headcount of 250.
“the centre of excellence would create a pool of trained persons who would be used by argentum’s customers for providing powertrain solutions. in the next three to four years, we would be looking to train 700-800 people,” said mr s.d. pradhan, ceo, aed.
on the revenue sharing arrangement, mr subbu said that argentum or its customers would pay dassault licence or user fee for buying its software for their powertrain products. declining to reveal specific names, he admitted that argentum was in the process of meeting the powertrain requirements of three global oems.
argentum motors, which acquired the production facility of the former daewoo motors, has the capacity to produce four lakh engines, four lakh gear boxes and 35,000 aluminium die casting division a year for various domestic and global automotive companies.
